ONE DECADE DOWN

Thursday was Matt and I’s ten year wedding anniversary! This week as I was looking back on the photos from our big day I started thinking about all the details and planning that consumed my 24 year-old (much thinner and MUCH tanner) self. Even though our wedding day was ten years ago I remember every detail like it was yesterday.

LOCATION: We got married in Amelia Island, Florida. Matt and I went to school in Florida and we wanted a lot of our friends to be able to come. Our parents and immediate family were all healthy and willing and able to travel so a destination wedding was what we chose. And the next thing we knew 120 of our closest friends and family joined us in Florida for our wedding weekend!

PHOTOGRAPHER: One of the best decisions we made for our wedding was who we chose for our photographer. Corey and Andrey photographed my sister’s wedding and my dad generously paid for them to fly to Florida and shoot our big day.

REHEARSAL DINNER & WELCOME RECEPTION: Matt’s parents kicked off the weekend by throwing an amazing rehearsal dinner and welcome reception for all of our guests at Horizon’s restaurant in Fernandina Beach.

WHAT I WORE: I wore a strapless Pronovias dress and Liz Rene Couture heels. I got both at Bella Bride in Lincoln, Nebraska. I wore my sister’s wedding veil.

BRIDESMAID DRESSES: My amazing friends and my sisters got their bridesmaid dresses from J. Crew and I guarantee never wore them again! Sorry ladies.

FIRST LOOK: Matt and I saw each other before the ceremony and I am so glad we did. Our first look pictures are some of my favorites. Our photographers perfectly captured how beautiful Amelia Island is with its contrasting landscape of beaches and spanish moss tree canopies.

CEREMONY DETAILS: Our ceremony and reception were at the same location – Amelia Island Plantation. I chose that location instead of a beach wedding because it reminded me so much of where Matt and I met. Tallahassee has more southern touches since it is so close to Georgia and this beautiful venue had everything I wanted. Thinking back on the day I feel so lucky that my dad was alive to walk me down the aisle. I walked the aisle to Pachelbel Canon in D Major and met Matt under a gorgeous oak tree.

COCKTAIL RECEPTION: Matt’s aunt was our officiant and our ceremony was short and sweet. And it was time to party! We were the first couple to get married after college so the drinks started flowing immediately. Because we got married at a historic site we were required to have a wedding planner. She was so helpful on the day of and came up with a few really cute ideas like the cocktail receptions signature drink “The Mick N’ Mattini”.

FLOWERS: Our wedding planner also helped us find our florist who knocked my vision out of the park. Matt’s parents paid for our flowers which as any bride knows is one of the most expensive parts of a wedding.

DINNER: We had a plated dinner and laughed until we cried during the toasts. My dad teased me about my childhood, my sister Marci introduced herself as Micki, and Matt’s brother Brian ended his toast with the Florida State warchant which of course brought a lot of participation by our Seminole guests in attendance.

FIRST DANCE: Matt and I’s first dance was to Jack Johnson “Better Together”. Who knows what we were laughing at but this picture is my favorite from the day.

RECEPTION: The evening was exactly what I wanted – dancing, laughing, and ridiculousness. Our wedding planner had to go out to get more alcohol TWICE which I didn’t hear about until the next day. We had hand-rolled cigars and a DJ with gold teeth who played everything from my favorite song Shout!, rap, and Frank Sinatra. It was perfection.

LATE NIGHT SNACK & SEND OFF: To end the evening our guests were treated to late night Chick Fil A sandwiches before they sent us off with our driver in a vintage Rolls Royce.

Weddings are expensive and some say over the top, but looking back on our day I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Marriage is a beautiful thing but it’s tough. Really really tough. Matt and I have been thru so much and on big anniversaries like this one looking back on the pictures from our wedding day bring me back to how I felt ten years ago. I love you Matty!
