A Splash of Christmas 2018

Happy Holidays

CHRISTMAS 2018 WAS THE BEST ONE YET! WE STAYED IN VANCOUVER FOR THE HOLIDAYS WHICH PROVED TO BE VERY RELAXING. I TOOK MULTIPLE NAPS AND I AM NOT A NAP PERSON. IT FELT AMAZING!  I DIDN’T SPEND A LOT OF TIME TAKING PICTURES OR EDITING THEM. I TRIED TO SOAK IN AS MUCH OF THE DAY AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT BEING DISTRACTED BY MY PHONE.

HERE IS A QUICK SUMMARY OF HOW WE SPENT THIS CHRISTMAS:

ON CHRISTMAS EVE WE OPENED FAMILY PRESENTS WHICH INCLUDED BOARD GAMES AND A REMOTE CONTROL CAR (JEEP). ISN’T THIS WRAPPING PAPER FROM HOME GOODS ADORABLE?!

AFTER WE OPENED OUR FAMILY PRESENTS, CHARLIE AND THOMAS OPENED CHRISTMAS EVE BOXES SENT FROM THEIR NANA AND DUDE IN HOUSTON.  A MATCHING PAIR OF PAJAMAS WERE IN EACH BOX ALONG WITH THEIR FAVORITE CANDY. I LOVE MATCHING PAJAMAS AND THEY CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY PAIRS. I DIDN’T GET A CUTE PICTURE OF THE TWO OF THEM SIDE BY SIDE IN THEIR NEW PJ’S BUT YOU CAN SEE THEM IN THE PICTURES BELOW FROM CHRISTMAS DAY.

AFTER OPENING UP OUR CHRISTMAS EVE PRESENTS WE PLAYED BOARD GAMES THEN ATE DINNER. THEN WE WATCHED THE GRINCH FOR THE 500TH TIME THIS MONTH. CHARLIE KNOWS EVERY WORD (..AND BY THE WAY SHE PRONOUNCES GRINCH WITH A SOUTHERN ACCENT LIKE “GR-AA-NCH”). IT MAKES ME GIGGLE EVERYTIME. THEN IT WAS TIME TO MAKE COOKIES FOR SANTA. AND OF COURSE YOU CAN’T FORGET THE CARROTS FOR THE REINDEER. OUR LIVE-IN NANNY NATASHA HELPED US DECORATE THE COOKIES. NATASHA IS FROM RUSSIA SO IT WAS FUN TO TALK ABOUT OUR OWN TRADITIONS.

WHEN WE WERE DONE WITH COOKIES NATASHA GAVE PRESENTS TO CHARIE AND THOMAS. IT WAS REALLY SWEET OF HER TO BUY THEM. WE THEN GAVE NATASHA HER CHRISTMAS PRESENT. I WENT WAY OVER THE BUDGET MATT AND I DISCUSSED AND DECIDED TO GET HER 5 PERSONAL TRAINING SESSIONS AT THE GYM SHE GOES TO EVERY NIGHT. SPENT DOUBLE THE BUDGET WHICH ISN’T HARD TO DO IN VANCOUVER. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT FOR SOMEONE WHO TAKES SUCH GREAT CARE OF OUR KIDDOS. SHE WAS INCREDIBLY THANKFUL FOR THE GIFT.

THE KIDS WENT TO BED EARLY CHRISTMAS EVE AND MATT AND I WATCHED CHRISTMAS VACATION WHILE I FINISHED WRAPPING GIFTS (I AM WEIRD AND OCD ABOUT WRAPPING GIFTS OTHERWISE MATT WOULD HAVE HELPED). I WENT WAY OVER THE TOP WITH THE AMOUNT OF GIFTS AND COLOR COORDINATION OF THE WRAPPING PAPER BUT I AM TOTALLY OK WITH THAT.

THE PICTURE BELOW SHOWS THE GIFTS FROM SANTA. YOU CAN’T SEE THEM WELL BUT DRAPED ON EACH CHAIR ARE SANTA BAGS MY SISTER IN LAW PERSONALIZED. NOTICE THE COORDINATION OF COLORS WITH THE BAGS AND WRAPPING PAPER. I MIGHT NEED HELP.

THE STOCKINGS BELOW ARE FROM POTTERY BARN KIDS. WHILE I SPLURGED ON GIFTS AND THE STOCKINGS THEMSELVES, I ALWAYS GO CHEAP FOR STOCKING STUFFERS. THIS YEAR I GOT EVERYTHING FOR THE 2 KIDS STOCKINGS FOR $28 CAD ($21 USD). I GOT EVERYTHING FROM THE DOLLAR STORE IN WEST VANCOUVER. MY MOTHER IN LAW TAUGHT ME WHAT I KNOW ABOUT WHAT TO BUY AT THE DOLLAR STORE AND STOCKING STUFFERS ARE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST.

THE KIDS WOKE UP AT 6AM AND FREAKED OUT OVER ALL OF THE GIFTS IN THE LIVING ROOM. THE HIT FOR THOMAS WAS THE STEP 2 ROLLER COASTER AND CAR. HE LITERALLY DID NOT OPEN UP ONE SINGLE PRESENT AFTER HE SAW THAT THING (LOOK AT HIM RIDING IT BELOW – THIS WAS PROBABLY HIS 100TH RIDE THAT DAY). THE ONLY THING THAT TOOK HIM AWAY FROM THE ROLLER COASTER WAS HIS STOCKING STUFFER WHICH HAD CANDY IN IT. FAST RIDES AND CANDY – THOMAS IS LIVING HIS BEST LIFE.

CHARLIE’S FAVORITE PRESENTS WERE A RAINBOW UNICORN AND A HORSE STABLE. BOTH PRESENTS WERE FROM GRANDPARENTS – THEY KNOW HER BEST 🙂  I DIDN’T GET ANY PICTURES OF HER FAVORITE GIFTS, BUT HERE ARE A FEW PICTURES OF CHARLIE OPENING UP GIFTS ON CHRISTMAS MORNING.

THE ONLY PRESENT THAT WASN’T A HIT WAS THE BARBIE ROLLERBLADES. CHARLIE IS VERY COMPETITIVE AND GOT PISSED OFF WHEN SHE COULDN’T FIGURE OUT HOW TO BALANCE RIGHT AWAY. WE WILL REVISIT LATER BUT FOR NOW….AND I QUOTE…”I WILL NEVER RIDE THOSE ROLLERBLADES EVER AGAIN – I HATE ROLLERBLADES” WAS THE REACTION I GOT WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THE ROLLERBLADES. OOPS.

WE SPENT THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON AT THE HOUSE WATCHING MOVIES AND PLAYING WITH THEIR NEW TOYS. WE ALSO FACE-TIMED OUR FAMILIES AND ENJOYED THE VIEWS OF RAIN-FREE VANCOUVER.

THEN LATER IN THE AFTERNOON I COOKED CHRISTMAS DINNER (I REPEAT: I COOKED CHRISTMAS DINNER). OUR STOVE HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR OVER A MONTH AND OUR LANDLORD HASN’T FIXED IT, SO THE FACT THAT A TERRIBLE COOK MADE SOMETHING EDIBLE WITH NO WORKING STOVE IS A FREAKING MIRACLE.

I MADE MY MAC AND CHEESE USING MATT’S HIKING GAS STOVE, I BAKED A HAM,  AND BOUGHT PRE-BAKED DINNER ROLLS AND PRE-CUT FRUITS AND VEGGIES. MY DAD WOULD HAVE MADE FUN OF ME FOR THE LACK OF AUTHENTICITY BUT HE ALSO WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD THAT HIS DAUGHTER COOKED ON HIS FAVORITE HOLIDAY.  SPEAKING OF MY DAD – I STARTED A TRADITION THIS YEAR WHERE MY DAD GIVES EACH OF MY CHILDREN ONE SMALL TOY UP UNTIL THEIR 18TH BIRTHDAY. THOMAS WILL GET A TOY CAR EVERY YEAR (MY DAD WAS OBSESSED WITH CARS) AND CHARLIE WILL GET 2 UNICORNS. YES SHE GETS 2 BECAUSE THAT WAS ALWAYS MY DAD WITH HIS THREE DAUGHTERS – SPOILING US EVEN WHEN WE DIDN’T ASK FOR IT. I DIDN’T EVEN CRY WITH THIS TRADITION, IT GENUINELY MADE MY HEART HAPPY MAKING HIM A PART OF OUR CHRISTMAS AGAIN.

HERE IS THE FEAST I COOKED. YOU CAN’T SEE THE GORGEOUS HAM AT THE END BUT I PROMISE IT LOOKED DELICIOUS. WE OPENED ONE OF THE BOTTLES OF WINE WE GOT IN FRANCE AT OUR FAVORITE WINERY. IT TASTED GREAT.

BEFORE BED WE MADE ONE MORE SET OF COOKIES (GRINCH COOKIES) WHICH CALMED CHARLIE DOWN WHEN SHE WAS CRASHING FROM HER CHRISTMAS HIGH.

AND TO COMPLETE A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS I READ CHARLIE TWO OF HER NEW BERENSTAIN BEARS BOOKS. SHE SEEMED TO LOVE THEM JUST AS MUCH AS HER MOM DID AS A KID.

I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ARE ENJOYING TIME WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. I WILL BE SPENDING THE NEXT FIVE DAYS IN MY YOGA PANTS AND WRITING BLOG POSTS THAT ARE LONG OVERDUE. ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR 2018 AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY NEW BLOG – I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!
