I read an article recently that said 87% of Americans have no passion for their jobs. On average people spend 1/3 of their lives at work (90,000 hours in a lifetime). So 87% of people spend 1/3 of their lives working in a job that they are not passionate about.
I’ve had a job ever since I was a freshman in high school. By the time I graduated college I had worked at a tanning salon, at a cookie store in the mall, as a lifeguard, at a country club driving the beer cart, at a restaurant in Omaha, at Crabtree & Evelyn selling soap, at a restaurant in Tallahassee, at a small accounting firm as a bookkeeper, and at Florida State’s accounting office as an intern. I needed to work for the money, but the reality is I genuinely like working. But if anyone would have asked me if I had passion for my job prior to my current job I would have said no. After I graduated I landed a great job at a Big 4 accounting firm that was perfect for my career. But I didn’t have a passion for it. It took me 16 years and 10 jobs to find a job that I was passionate about. I am proud to say I am officially part of the 13% that have a passion for their job. Before I share why I am in the 13% club, please know I am not trying to boast about my company and my career, remember it took me 16 years to find a job I loved. No job is perfect but this job is perfect for me.
Here are a few reasons why I am in the 13% club:
- We Built That…And That….And That: My favorite thing about working in the construction industry is that I can see the results of our hard work. I love pointing out our completed projects and telling Charlie my company built that. She doesn’t really understand but she gets excited and her eyes light up every time. Knowing what it takes to get these massive projects built makes seeing it get to the finish line a lot sweeter. We build massive bridges, sports stadiums, power plants, and everything in between.
- The Culture: My Company has very high standards for our projects and for our people. We work long hours and we move all over North America with our families. Because we do that, we treat each other like family and we take care of spouses and children who support us on the wild roller coaster that we love. It’s not just me who loves the culture in my Company. Charlie Munger (Warren Buffett’s partner in Berkshire Hathaway) ranked my Company in the Top 3 best operating companies along with Costco and Genair. His reason? The culture.
- My Kids Think I’m Cool: My daughter has become fascinated with construction equipment. It may sound boring, but my Company has one of the largest equipment fleets. Our fleet includes 14,000 pieces of equipment with a replacement value of $2.3 Billion. There is no shortage of equipment pictures to look at or better yet equipment to ride like Thomas did below at Family Day.
- The Big Leagues: We work hard but we get rewarded. Having $9 billion in annual revenue has its perks. I get invited on the corporate jet from time to time which is something I never thought I would be able to do. The size of my company has also given me the opportunity to speak in front of large audiences which has boosted my confidence for speaking in public.
- In The Driver’s Seat: Age and years of service are not factored into promotion decisions at my Company. We are the ultimate meritocracy and we reward those that work hard and care about the Company. We are 100% employee owned and the employees who own stock are strategically selected based on merit. For a competitive driven person like me this is a dream.
- The People: Everyone says they love their job because of the people. For me I feel lucky because I get to work with a wide range of people. Engineers, business people, designers, craft workers, and everyone else working for this company have very different skill sets which I love.
